Body Roundness Index — modern BMI alternative
BMI was invented in 1832 by a Belgian astronomer. It does not differentiate fat from muscle. Body Roundness Index uses waist + height for a direct measure of central adiposity, the strongest predictor of cardiometabolic disease.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is BRI better than BMI?
BMI ignores body shape. A muscular athlete can register obese; a thin person with belly fat can register normal. BRI uses waist + height to measure visceral-fat risk directly. NEJM 2024 study (33K adults, 20-yr follow-up) found BRI predicted mortality more accurately than BMI.
BRI scale?
<3.41 low risk · 3.41–4.45 moderate · 4.45–5.46 high · >5.46 very high all-cause mortality risk.
How to measure waist?
Around the navel, after exhaling normally. Soft tape, parallel to floor. Don't suck in.
