Frequently Asked Questions
Where does "8 glasses a day" come from?
Misinterpretation of 1945 US Food and Nutrition Board recommendation: ~2.5L total fluid. They explicitly noted most comes from food. Modern science: total fluid from drinks + food. Bodies are good at signaling thirst.
Does coffee count?
Yes. Caffeine is mildly diuretic but the water content of coffee outweighs this. Coffee/tea hydrate. Alcohol doesn't (net dehydrating).
Heat-stroke threshold?
>32°C + >70% humidity = sweat doesn't evaporate, body can't cool. Drink steadily, get to A/C, monitor for symptoms (headache, confusion, no sweating despite heat = emergency).
