Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Paris budget per person?
IPCC: remaining global carbon budget for 1.5°C ~400 GtCO2 (Jan 2026). Divided by 8 billion × ~30 year horizon = ~1.6-2.0 tonnes per person per year by 2030, declining to near-zero by 2050.
Is this fair?
Pure per-capita is one model. Others adjust for historical emissions (rich countries owe more), poverty (basic needs need carbon), or capability. This tool uses simple per-capita — start of conversation, not final word.
My footprint is way over budget — now what?
Most high-income individuals are 5-10× over fair share. Goal: trajectory, not perfection. 50% reduction in 5 years = aggressive but doable. Focus on top 3 levers (flights, diet, heating). Systemic change matters too.
