Frequently Asked Questions
Why anchor high?
Anchoring research (Galinsky, Mussweiler): final offers cluster around the anchor, even when both sides know it. Anchoring 15-25% above target lifts final offer by 8-12% on average.
What if they ask my current salary?
Many US states ban this question. Deflect: "I'm looking for a market-rate offer, $XYZ-$ABC range based on my research." Don't anchor yourself with a low past number.
Counter-offer or accept?
Almost always counter once. 80% of offers have headroom. Counter ≥10% above first offer, with 1-2 sentence reason. Worst case: same offer. Best case: 5-15% raise.
