Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 18-25% rule fair?
It originated when minimum wages were lower in real terms. Today bill prices rose 3× while tipping % rose. Fair tip should reflect server's gap to living wage, not always-rising %.
Why does country matter?
US: $2.13 federal tipped minimum (server depends on tips). Germany/Japan: tipping unusual, fair living wage built into prices. Australia: 22% standard wage, 10% tip is gracious.
Should I tip on tax + service charge?
Tax: no. Service charge: check if it goes to staff (often kept by management). On pre-tax + pre-service, regular calculation.
