Visual Metronome with BPM Tap

A free, browser-native metronome with visual pulse, audio click, and tap-to-detect-BPM. Set the tempo with the slider (40–240 BPM), choose a time signature (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8), and the metronome plays. The pulse circle flashes on every beat, with a higher-pitched click on the first beat of each measure. The classical tempo name (Largo / Adagio / Andante / Moderato / Allegro / Presto / Prestissimo) updates automatically as you change BPM.

How the BPM-tap works

Tap the TAP button in rhythm with a song or recording. After three or more consistent taps, the tool measures the average interval between your taps and locks in the BPM. Useful when you need to match a track's tempo in a DAW, or just want to know how fast a song is going. Outlier taps (double or half tempo) are filtered out automatically.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Set the tempo

Use the slider or +/- buttons to set BPM (40–240). The classical tempo name updates automatically (Largo, Andante, Allegro, etc.).

  2. 2

    Or tap to find BPM

Tap the big tap button in rhythm with a song. After 3 taps, the BPM auto-locks. Useful for matching live music or DAW tempo.

  3. 3

    Pick time signature

Default is 4/4. Toggle to 3/4 (waltz) or 2/4 (march) for different beat counts per measure.

  4. 4

    Press start

The pulse circle flashes on each beat, the audio clicks (higher pitch on beat 1), and the beat-position dots track which beat in the measure.

  5. 5

    Practice

Set tempo slow, increase 4-8 BPM per pass when comfortable. Most pieces benefit from practicing 20–30% slower than performance tempo.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the BPM?
Drift is under 5ms over 60 seconds (≈ 0.5 BPM accuracy). Uses Web Audio API timing rather than setInterval for tight sync. For most practice purposes this is professional-grade.
Why does the click sound clipped or stop on iPhone?
iOS Safari aggressively suspends AudioContext when the tab loses focus. Tap "Start" again to resume. We added a visibility-change handler that restarts audio when you return to the tab.
How does tap-to-BPM work?
It measures the time between your taps, averages the last 4 intervals, and converts to BPM. After 3 consistent taps, the tempo locks in. Outliers (taps that are double or half the average) are filtered.
Classical tempo names — what do they mean?
< 60 Largo (very slow) · 60–76 Adagio (slow) · 76–108 Andante (walking) · 108–120 Moderato (moderate) · 120–156 Allegro (fast) · 156–200 Presto (very fast) · 200+ Prestissimo (extremely fast).
Does this tool store my data?
No. Tempo and time-signature settings stay in memory only. No cookies, no accounts, no tracking.
