Where does "8 glasses" come from?
A 1945 US Food + Nutrition Board recommendation: ~2.5 L/day total fluid. Got mistranslated to "8 glasses of water" without the original caveat that "most of this is contained in food". The "8 × 8 oz of WATER" myth has no clinical evidence base. Real fluid need varies hugely with body size, activity, climate, and pregnancy/lactation.
How much do I really need?
EFSA 2024 + IOM: ~35 ml per kg body weight as a starting baseline. Athletes + hot climates: +500-1500 ml. Coffee/alcohol: ~+125 ml per drink (mild diuretic effect). Pregnant: +300 ml. Lactating: +700 ml. The 70 kg average adult = ~2.5 L total fluid (water + food + drinks). About 1.5 L should be from drinks specifically.
Does coffee count?
Mostly yes. The "coffee dehydrates you" myth was disproven (Killer 2014, multiple RCTs). Habitual coffee drinkers absorb ~85% of the fluid. Net hydration positive. Same for tea. Alcohol IS net dehydrating (~125 ml lost per drink). Sodas count for hydration but the sugar isn't great for other reasons.
Can I drink too much?
Yes — hyponatremia (water intoxication) is real but rare. Risk: drinking >5 L in a few hours during endurance events without electrolytes. Death possible (marathon hyponatremia cases). Nonrmal fluid intake spread through the day = essentially no risk. The "trust thirst" rule works for healthy adults; older adults often have blunted thirst + need to drink proactively.
