Where does this framework come from?
John Bowlby + Mary Ainsworth (1960s-80s) developed attachment theory from infant-caregiver research. Bartholomew & Horowitz (1991) extended it to 4 adult styles: Secure, Anxious-Preoccupied, Dismissive-Avoidant, Fearful-Avoidant. This test uses the Bartholomew/ECR-R framework with 16 items, validated across 100+ studies including 2024 meta-analyses.
Can attachment style change?
Yes — slowly. Roughly 30% of people change style across decades, usually toward Secure. Drivers: long-term secure relationship, therapy (especially EFT or psychodynamic), self-work (journaling, somatic work), parenting consciously. The label is descriptive, not destiny.
Is "Secure" the only good one?
Secure is best for relationships, but each style has gifts. Anxious people are deeply attentive and emotionally tuned. Avoidant people are independent and self-reliant. Disorganized often have profound creativity born from complexity. The goal isn't to be Secure-shaped — it's to recognize patterns and respond consciously.
Should I worry about my score?
